California Forest Ecosystems

California Meadows

California meadows can have a transformative effect on any landscape, bringing a sense of beauty and tranquility. Many of California’s native grasses, sedges, and wildflowers have been removed or eliminated from California's once sprawling grass lands. Establishing a meadow inspired by the diversity of California's grasses, sedges and wildflowers, helps bring back and restore this once-vast grassland diversity.

Design Concepts:

  • Diverse Meadow: Create a vibrant meadow using a mix of native grasses, sedges, and wildflowers to enhance biodiversity and seasonal color.

  • Lawn Alternative: Design a low-maintenance meadow using one or two species, such as a vigorous sedge, to create a flowing, natural look that replaces traditional lawns.

  • Hybrid Meadow: Combine both approaches - use one or two primary species for structure, while adding bunch-grasses, irises, and wildflowers to add texture, color, and accent.

California Chaparral Landscapes

California is known for its chaparral landscapes and the beauty, color, and fragrance that comes with them. Installing a chaparral landscape greatly supports wildlife, reduces water consumption and brings an aromatic experience to the landscape.

Features:

  • Drought Tolerant: Chaparral landscapes are known for their resilience and ability to survive, if not thrive, with little to no water, reducing and/or eliminating irrigation requirements - preserving our precious water sources .

  • Magnificent: These landscapes host a diverse array of magnificent plants - one of my favorites being manzanita.

  • Low Maintenance: Once established, these landscapes require very little maintenance, saving time, money and energy.

California Forest Ecosystems

California’s deciduous and evergreen forests are among the most diverse and inspiring ecosystems in the world - from towering redwoods to shaded oak woodlands. These landscapes provide habitat, stabilize soil, and create cool, restorative environments that embody the beauty of California’s natural heritage.

  • Live within the forest? Enjoy many of California’s shade-tolerant plants that naturally thrive beneath forest canopies - adding diversity and beauty to your landscapes.

  • Have a favorite native California tree? Plant this favorite tree of yours in your yard, and begin creating a your own California Forest Ecosystem.
