Inspired by the idea of creating and installing California Flora landscapes that support native plant diversity and wildlife - while also enjoying the flavor and freshness of growing your own food? Kevin’s Landscaping has you covered. Kevin gained large sums of knowledge and skills working as a farmer, and earning his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) from the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center (OAEC). He has what it takes to design a productive vegetable garden or established an Edible Landscape of your dreams.
Design Concepts
When considering growing your own food, it's valuable to consider many of the edible plants/foods that naturally grow in California. Some of these plants include: Currants, Huckleberry, Oregon Grape, Miners lettuce, Hazelnuts, the list goes on and on.
A large portion of the landscape can be designed and established, prioritizing natives, while a small zone (or area of the homeowner’s choice) is set aside for edibles. This is known as Hydrozoning.
Another option, for those who enjoy growing as much food as possible, is to design and establish natives in the front yard, (which is typically unfenced) and creating an edible garden of Eden, in the back yard (which is usually fenced in). This approach is highly effective and efficient, since many natives can tolerate pests such as deer, while many edibles cannot. These gives you the best of both worlds while not needing to acquire extra material (such as fencing) to grow food.
Some Edible Landscape design features include: Vegetable Gardens, Orchards (Fruit tree or Nuts), Permaculture Food Forest Concepts.
